Helpstopit.com is home to an action group protesting against the proposed plans to build a landfill site in the village of Wingate, Co Durham. The neighbouring villages of Trimdon, Castle Eden and Wheatley Hill will also see a significant impact.
The site is planned to be built on green belt farmland with the entrance situated directly off the Durham road at the top of the village. The duration of the site operating is to be 20 years. The company applying is Premier Waste Management.
AIR POLLUTION - There were 185 serious air pollution incidents in England and Wales in 2003. 86 of these were at waste management facilities.*
LAND POLLUTION - There were 373 serious land pollution incidents in England and Wales in 2003. 74 of these were at waste management facilities.*
TRAFFIC - Premier Waste will have 75 lorries a day visiting the site, which equates to 150 going past your doorstep every day. This does not include any other vehicles using the site.
WATER - The site is planned to be built on a major aquifer, which feeds many reservoirs. Hartlpool water has 100% supply from this aquifer.
With the land susceptable to subsidence this could be a serious pollution incident waiting to happen.

Wingate has been a depressed area for many years, the environment has already had to cope with coal mining, slag heaps and previous landfill sites. It is now finally making a bid to improve itself with investment and new executive housing in and around the village. Castle Eden is providing £300k housing nearby. This is attracting business commuters who work in Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
To build a landfill site in such close proximity would damage all this good work and essentially stop the regeneration of the village in its steps.
Wimpy Homes have already stated that if the plans are passed the type of homes planned for their development will need to be re-assessed.
