For more than 150 years the county was one of the UK's biggest coal producers but when the pits closed, the scar that the industry had left on the landscape was there for all to see. Black, smoking spoil heaps towered over the mining towns and the beaches were covered in colliery waste. Despite the Environment Agency objection Premier Waste refuse to withdraw their application!
